Paul Martin Inn was granted its charter on March 5, 1999.
The Inn was named after the Honourable Paul Martin Senior, a noted Canadian politician who represented the Windsor area riding of Essex East in the House of Commons for 33 years, served in senior cabinet roles for Prime Ministers Mackenzie King, St. Laurent, Pearson and Trudeau, ran for the Liberal Party leadership three times and subsequently served as the Leader of the Government in the Senate. At the time of his death he was an adjunct professor at the University of Windsor.
Paul Martin Senior was the father of former Prime Minister Paul Martin Junior. The Honourable Paul Martin Jr., on behalf of the Martin family, consented to the naming of the Inn after his father.
